So I was originally clued into this 2001 4.0 Laredo by a coworker who asked me to check it out and see what it needed to be roadworthy. Her parents are now giving her their spare car so she’s passing, and now I think I’m going to jump on this.
It was left in the care of a mutual acquaintance by someone who has since gotten a new car and moved out of the area. It’s been sitting for close to a year and the dude just wants it gone at this point. He’s offering it for the low low sum of $500.
I’ve already jump started it and done some prelim work. It needs a new battery and tire and that’s about it. Subframes aren’t too crusty, and the interior doesn’t smell like it’s leaked at all while sitting. The only real issue I’ve found is that the HVAC is stuck in floor/defrost, which is totally livable.
I’m just waiting on confirmation that the title exists before I commit.

500 is part-out money, so yeah, even without a title it wouldn’t be too bad

The jeep tax is especially high here because of all the dirt roads. If I can get it to pass inspection it's automatically worth at least three grand.

Thats just this side of free
Do it

Then it wouldn’t be reasonable not to buy it, quick and easy flips are the reward for those who dare to do the work

That's exactly my thinking, this is such a good deal that it's irresponsible to not take it.

Nice price!

The trans on these is generally terrible, but aside from that no weird issues. You have selec-trac so you don’t have to worry about the full-time 4x4 seizing up. HVAC is the blend door, happens to almost all of them. Google it.

I genuinely don’t mind automatic transmissions no matter how sucky people claim they are. I drove a three-speed Geo Metro for three years and was fine with it.

Funny, I thought “new hampshire” before I saw your username or looked at the picture ....
Yeah for $500 if it can pass inspection that’s a no-brainer. Assuming there’s a title.

No, that HVAC issue is not the typical WJ blend door issue. The blend door issue affects temperature control and is far more common with the dual-zone automatic climate control than the regular that’s on that Laredo.

The car and I are both in MA, but yeah. I already fixed an emissions code (blown fuse for O2 sensors) and that was the only code stored in the ECU. I literally just have to check all the lighting and it'll pass.

When I see a vehicle parked in the woods for more than a season with a stuck blend door, I always think mice. Might be jammed with a nest.

I mean terrible as in, prone to failure.

I DD a 270k mile BM W. I’m not afraid of failure.

The 42re isnt a bad transmission, you have to adjust the band s at regular intervals if you want to get the expected life out of it and considering that isnt sonething people normally know they should do they get labeled as junk.

But why did the fuse blow? Ah, just dead-short it to get through inspection.

Random fluke, I hope. The blown one matched the rest of the fuses so I don't think it's been replaced before.

That’s good. Yeah, it’s always a sign when a blown fuse is either a) installed the opposite way from all the others, or b) clearly a different amperage

WJ seats are very comfy.
HVAC problem is most likely the blend doors. Very common problem. This kit is your likeliest solution.
Selec-Trac with the NV242 transfer case is a good system but full-time mode uses an open center differential rather than LSD.

At $500 and the fact that it runs, I’ll give that a Nice Price.

Open center diff is better than my current rig which is "rwd car in the snow"
